Morning Time

Morning Time one of my favorite things in our homeschool days. Most people will call it a Morning Basket or Circle Time. Morning time is simply a routine that sets the atmosphere for the rest of the day.

While it’s important to remember that homeschooling looks different for every family, but I’m sure we can all agree that it give us one thing - flexibility. Ideally Morning time would happen everyday, but we live in the real world, and life just doesn’t always work out that way. There are bad days, and like everything else with homeschooling and the seasons of our life, it requires patience and adjustment.

We start with breakfast, there’s always fresh fruit and I’ll have a cup of coffee or tea, sometimes, I’ll have both. Then I’ll brush and style their hair! Since the very beginning of our homeschool journey, Morning Time has always been a time filled with music, poetry, art and nature.

When my girls were much younger we would sing songs together in the playroom, now that they are a little more independent, they will sit on our breakfast table and eat or color while I read aloud. Nothing overwhelming, I assure you, just a stress free way to start off the day. While we don’t call it a Morning Basket, we do love using baskets to organise.

Simple things we keep in our Morning Basket:

A Book of Poetry, a Chapter Book, Color Pencils, and Paper! Some of our favourites include:-

  • Winnie the Pooh - The Complete Collection (when my girls were 2 and 5)

  • Sing a Song of Seasons: A Nature Poem for everyday of the year

  • Beatrix Potter - The Complete Tales

  • Among the People Series by Clara Dillingham Pearson

    Slow Down by Rachel Williams

With the seasons changing, the blossoms of spring have really inspired me. I created a few mini-unit studies that are absolutely perfect for my Morning Time and I’m hooked. They have made my mornings more meaningful. I plan to incorporate a different flower every month in our Morning Basket.

Each mini unit will include a Parts of the Flower Poster, Coloring Page (label if you wish), Copy-work, Nature Fact Cards on the Flowers, Letters, Poetry or Art Appreciation sometimes there’ll be Geography or a mini Composer Study with selected musical pieces.

I hope they will make your mornings together simple and beautiful so you will have time to focus on the magical moments of doing life together!
